Journal entry #4: Becoming My Own Advocate

One of my proudest moments was having an honest, courageous conversation with my doctor.

I asked difficult questions. I expressed my fears openly. That conversation marked a turning point: it empowered me to take an active role in my treatment.

From the very beginning, I knew I had to advocate for myself.

I approached every appointment prepared: with research, questions, and notes. If something didn’t feel right, I asked for second opinions. I demanded explanations. This was my body. My life. I needed to understand every aspect of my care.

I created a system to track appointments, medications, and side effects. Whether through apps or handwritten calendars, staying organized gave me a sense of control in an otherwise chaotic time.

Before every doctor’s appointment, I made sure I was ready:

  • I prepared detailed lists of questions and concerns.

  • I gathered and organized all medical records and treatment history.

  • I prioritized open, honest communication about symptoms and emotional challenges.

  • I asked for clarification whenever something didn’t make sense.

Finding community with other survivors also strengthened me. It reminded me I was not alone.

I learned that self-care isn’t optional: it’s essential. I focused on nutrition and gentle exercise to manage energy and side effects. I incorporated mindfulness, meditation, deep breathing, and yoga into my daily routine.

I am proud of the sweet strength I discovered within myself: how I armored up for this fight in a calm, authentic, and brave way.
